How to style your bed like a pro in 3 simple steps

Have you ever wondered how interior designers make a bed look magazine-worthy? Get your bed ready for its closeup with these 3 easy steps:

textured neutral bedding

1. Foundation

Start with tonal shades of color or a monochromatic palette. Your base layers will include a fitted sheet, flat sheet and comforter or blanket.

Extra tip: A uniquely textured quilt or duvet will add visual interest while elevating the overall look.

2. Pillows

Time to pile on the pillows! You'll need a variety of types: sleep pillows, decorative shams and accent pillows. As an interior designer, I'm often asked, "How many pillows do I really need?"

While this is ultimately a personal decision, a good rule of thumb is to base the amount on the size of the bed. For a king bed, use three European shams, three standard shams and one to three accent pillows. Use two of everything for a queen and one of each for a twin bed.

Pillow Pattern Mix

Also, be sure and play with scale, pattern, shape and texture while sticking to your color palette.

Extra tip: when it comes to pattern, use a combination of small, medium and large scale designs to create a polished look.

3. Extras

Lastly, fold a cozy throw blanket at the foot of the bed for added function and style.

Extra tip: Go for a contrasting color. You'll get bonus design points if this contrasting tone is also incorporated in the pillows, whether it's just a splash of it seen along the border of your shams or a solid accent pillow.
